For the Parent/Teacher
These Quizzes may be conducted by teachers or parents directly with students, whether it be in the classroom with a whole group of students or in individual tuition at school or at home. They are particularly helpful for parents looking for practical ways to assist their child in learning how to read. Of course you can engage in other helpful activities along with this, like reading one of your child’s favourite books to your child every day, while pointing to the words on the page while your read, so that your child can try to get familiar with the way the words look and sound.
Quiz Guidelines
Step 1) One to two quizzes – Phonics Quiz One (below), every day, for three to six weeks. Recommended time per day: Five to ten minutes.
Step 2) One to two quizzes – Phonics Quiz Two, every day, for three to six weeks. Recommended time per day: Five to ten minutes.
Please note: Generally there are different variations in each quiz, but any repetition consolidates learning.
Why Quizzes?
A lot of tutorials are dry and lacklustre, but studies have shown that children are more likely to learn when they are taught through fun activities and play. This quiz is intended to be a positive and fun way for you to help your child to learn how to read. A wide variety of phonics is used in this quiz, in order to enhance the learning experience. You get to spend quality time with your child, and your child becomes more familiar with the way words look and sound. Start with Phonics Quiz One (below) every day for three to six weeks, and then do Phonics Quiz Two for three to six weeks. This approach should prove to be a positive learning experience for your child.
How to do the quizzes:
Read and Point: As you read out each question and option, point to the corresponding words so your child can follow along visually. Occasionally remind your child to look at each word on the screen as you point to it.
Repeat Together: Have your child repeat each option after you. If needed, repeat the question and the options again, so your child can properly understand and then choose an option.
Select an Answer: Your child can choose an answer either by saying the word, pointing to it on the screen, or by saying a, b, c, or d.
Encourage and Reward: As you progress, verbally reward your child when they get an answer right, or if they manage to pronounce a word correctly. If your child makes a mistake, gently show them the right answer. Overall, focus on their progress rather than their mistakes.
Foster Independence: As you repeat the quizzes over the weeks, the phonic sounds will be reinforced and you may notice improvements in your child’s ability to read. In the final weeks, sometimes encourage your child to try saying the options on the screen before you say them.
